Follow the flow to downstream equipment
The operator identifies normal flow, overflows, bypasses and equipment that must stay live. Cleaning direction and collection are chosen with those assets in view. Silt or residue is captured before it reaches a treatment stage, watercourse or pipe that is outside the released work area. High pressure jetting for utilities is then directed away from sensitive downstream equipment.
The operator explains the asset’s normal duty and any change in flow, level or condition. Current drawings show chambers, hatches, feeds, overflows and sensitive equipment farther along the system.
The collection point is agreed with the destination of loosened solids in mind, especially where a treatment stage or watercourse sits downstream.
Silt in a channel, mineral build-up in a pipe and solids in a tank move differently. The operator identifies normal flow, available bypasses and sensitive outlets so each asset receives its own jetting direction and collection point. Changes in upstream flow during the job are assigned to a named contact. The receiving chamber or tank is watched during jetting so a changing flow cannot overwhelm the collection arrangement.
Deposits are removed in the direction of the protected collection point. The agreed route and outlets are then checked, with defects exposed by cleaning recorded for separate repair.

Utilities and water sites can include tanks, channels, culverts, process pipework and open structures. Current and expected flow conditions affect access, nozzle movement and the ability to collect loosened material. Upstream changes, storm conditions or an operational transfer may alter when cleaning can be carried out.
The survey checks chambers, hatches, headwalls and pipe connections against the actual restriction. Downstream treatment stages, watercourses and sensitive equipment are identified before the jetting direction is chosen.
Containment, drainage plans and completion
GOV.UK’s pollution prevention guidance recommends keeping an accurate drainage plan and preventing contaminated water from entering surface-water systems. The utilities jetting contractor uses the site’s information to plan capture, temporary storage and the approved route for silt or wash water.

Name the route or structure first, then add the current flow and the outlet that needs protection. A sketch can mark chambers, headwalls and treatment stages more clearly than a long description. Earlier camera footage or sampling may help identify the deposit. The quoting company uses this information to discuss equipment position and collection without treating a live network like an isolated pipe.
Where flows can change during the day, include the operating contact and the conditions that trigger a change. This helps identify a suitable working period and the point at which cleaning must stop or the area must be made safe.
Some work can proceed around a live process when flow, access and controls support the planned method. Many items of plant and equipment still need isolation or a planned reduced operation.

Released silt should travel downstream only when the receiving system and site permissions support that route. Otherwise the plan needs a suitable collection and disposal point.
