Reach inside the vessel and a route back out
Photographs from each usable opening help reveal where fixed internals interrupt the line of sight. If the floor slopes to a sump, the crew may work residue towards it; if the outlet is isolated or raised, another recovery position may be needed. Unseen areas remain outside the clean unless another position is agreed.
Measurements and internal fittings
Tell the provider what the vessel held and whether it is now empty, drained and released. A view through more than one opening is useful when a coil or agitator hides part of the shell.
The first trial then shows whether the residue returns as liquid, fragments or slurry and whether the prepared collection point can keep up.
Jetting the tank while controlling loosened residue
Once the head position is proved, the clean can move across the reachable surfaces towards the prepared sump or suction point. The operator watches how residue travels and changes the sequence if it begins to collect behind an internal fitting.
Where remote or external positioning is workable, it can reduce the need to place people inside the vessel. Any remaining entry decision belongs to the site’s confined-space arrangements.
At handover, the camera or site inspection records the cleaned areas and the surfaces hidden by fixed internals. That is more useful than a general statement that the whole vessel was washed.
Residues that have set solid need a different conversation, which we cover under hardened tank deposits. Hygiene-critical vessels in food and beverage manufacturing bring their own rules, and our note on preparing equipment for jetting explains what to do before the vessel-cleaning team arrives.
Previous contents influence the cleaning method, water handling and site controls. Tell us what the tank or vessel held, whether it has been drained and decontaminated, and what residue remains on the floor, shell or internals. Coils, agitators, baffles and damaged linings can limit movement and create areas that need a different approach. Isolation, opening and access stay under the site’s permit arrangements. The Health and Safety Executive’s confined-spaces guidance explains why entry risks and emergency arrangements must be considered before anyone works inside an enclosed space. Remote or external cleaning is considered where the geometry allows it.
Recovering residue and checking the cleaned vessel
Water can turn dry build-up into slurry and move it towards outlets, sumps and low points. The collection route, temporary storage and authorised disposal arrangement are fixed before the first pass.
The completion check should match what happens next. Inspection, repair, product change or coating work may each require a different finish and record. Photographs, a visual inspection or notes on inaccessible areas can be agreed before cleaning starts. If distance from the active head may help, review our remote water jetting service.
A rotating head can cover much of a plain vessel from the manway. Fixed coils, baffles and agitators can hide surfaces, so those areas need a different head position or a separately controlled access method.
Recovered washings follow the route agreed with the site and its licensed carrier. The vessel contents history is needed because it can change that route.
The required finish follows what the vessel will do next. Inspection, a product change and a lining repair each need a different standard agreed before work starts.
